Homeowners warned of oil thefts

8 October 2008

Consumers in Northern Ireland have been advised to be aware of oil thefts across the province.

Police have warned second home owners in particular to be alert to the possibility of fuel being stolen while their house is unoccupied.

Detective Chief Inspector Rachel Shields has therefore recommended that if people are not planning to stay in their alternative residence, they should leave as little oil in the tank as they can.

"As second homes may not be occupied just as frequently as they were during July and August, oil tanks should not be left filled to the brim," she commented.

Speaking to the Coleraine Times, she added that in order to stop criminals profiting from their illegal activities, members of the public must offer support and assistance to the police by taking preventative measures.

This comes shortly after the Norwich Evening News reported that oil theft is becoming a growing problem in parts of East Anglia.
